A New Name and More...

The University of Michigan's Division of Kinesiology is no longer....called that. Today, December 1st, 2008, marks the official name change to the School of Kinesiology. WOLV's own Larissa White went out on campus to get the story. Check it out.

WOLV Correspondent Lauren Crossley Gets Physics-cal...

In 1995, the University of Michigan Department of Physics began sharing some of the latest ideas in the field with the public in the Saturday Morning Physics lecture series.

At the lecture, physicists discuss their work in easy-to-understand, non-technical terms. The lectures include multimedia presentations such as hands-on demonstrations of the principles discussed, along with slides, video, and computer simulations.

WOLV correspondent Lauren Crossley was up bright and early this past Saturday to check out the Saturday Morning Physics lecture herself in the Randall Laboratory on Church Street.

Hollywood Moves in On Campus

Filming for Rob Schneider and Jenna DeWan's new comedy, 'Virgin on Bourbon Street' kicked off on campus Tuesday afternoon.

U of M's Ingalls Mall, the space between the Modern Languages Building (MLB) and the League, was transformed into a full-on movie set, with a cast and crew of about 20.

Co-star Jenna DeWan was on set.

DeWan plays Priscilla White, a pure, clean-cut virgin who goes to college on scholarship from a sexual abstinence before marriage organization.

White's roommate, Naz (Brianne Davis) is a wild and crazy party girl who gets White into some trouble when she lures White into a night of debauchery that includes an appearance in a 'Girls Gone Wild'-like video.

The girls then attempt to track down the producer behind the film, the sleazy Crazy Ed, played by none other than Rob Schneider.

Filming for 'Virgin on Bourbon Street' took place earlier in the week in Downtown Detroit, and will wrap up within the next few days here in Ann Arbor.

The film, directed by Clare Kilner ('The Wedding Date'), is set to release sometime next spring/summer.

The Michigan Difference

The Michigan Difference Campaign raised $3,115,644,057 for the university to greatly increase student financial aid, create new student programs, hire and retain outstanding faculty, support groundbreaking research, and provide new buildings for health care, teaching, arts and entertainment, and more.

The sum is believed to be the largest amount ever raised by a public university, and substantially exceeds the goal of $2.5 billion announced in 2004.

The campaign celebration was emceed by NBC Sports anchor and U-M alum Andrea Joyce and CBS Early Show anchor Harry Smith (Central College in Iowa).

I went to Hill Auditorium on Friday along with Newsfeed crew members Danielle and Sasha to view the campaign celebration.

Hey, everybody! So I hope ya saw Newsfeed tonight -- it was really great! If ya happened to miss it, though, I've a bit of material from the episode coming your way right now. The following is an interview with Ann Arbor Mayor Mark Hieftje, who was just re-elected in a landslide, and will enter his fifth term in office next year. Enjoy!

Newsfeed In November

Well, you heard him, or maybe you didn't....If you didn't catch our weatherman, Dave, announcing the forecast for this week, well, you didn't miss much because all you have to do is look outside (or step outside), and you know...it's...officially...COLD. Yet, Newsfeed of course treks on and gathers all the stories you need to know about the University of Michigan, the local Ann Arbor area, and the rest of the nation and world.

As November rolls in, I have realized we have a wonderful Monday crew this semester. We have political correspondents such as Matt Dupree, Whitson Gordon, and of course, our lovely Emily Zimmerman, who save the day with their brilliant thinking on-the-go. Just tonight, Mr. Dupree saved the show by jumping in last second and presenting all he knows about what our President-Elect is up to on his road to the White House. We will soon post an interview Mr. Dupree conducted with the Mayor of Ann Arbor.

Last week, Monday Newsfeed did not air due to the 2008 Election coverage. As you see below, we posted our Election Newsfeed 2008 episode for you to enjoy. Also, last week yours truly traveled to New York City to take on the New York City Marathon 2008, the last of a series of major marathons ran in the United States during the fall season. I took my camera with me to check out all the hype about this 26.2 mile footrace. Check it out up top!

Ross School of Business Election and Economy Panel

Four Ross School of Business professors analyzed election clips and discussed McCain and Obama's main issues, with an emphasis on the economy. There was a Q&A at the end, and the entire presentation remained bipartisan.

Swing Ann Arbor

Swing Ann Arbor is a student organization at U-M that provides Swing dancing classes and events for students and residents of Ann Arbor. I went out last Wednesday to the Michigan Union to check out one of the intermediate classes offered by the group!

Brother Yun visits Ann Arbor

Religious activist and author, Brother Yun, stopped in Ann Arbor during his U.S. college tour.  I asked three questions, and he talked for 20 minutes - one of the easiest interviews I've ever had!

Free Bagels!?

Common' students! You know you love 'em...that's right...free bagels, free Starbucks coffee, free hot chocolate and for all you non-coffee lovers, free tea. Don't worry, they even provide skim milk. It's Welcome Wednesdays and its happening at the Alumni Center here at the University of Michigan. Open to all students and all they can eat, the Alumni Center is offering these goodies each Wednesday from 8am-12pm for the rest of October and through to November 19th. The Alumni Center is located at the corner of Washington and Fletcher streets, next to the Michigan League and across from the MLB. Check out our report below!

Other newsy events that may interest you for the week:

-Hankerin' for some soccer spankerin'? The Michigan Woman's Soccer team will play their first game at the new University of Michigan Soccer Complex this Friday. They face Penn State at 4pm on the West Practice Field, followed by a Sunday game vs. Ohio State at noon at the West Practice Field.

-Ready to move out....next year? That's right, it's house hunting time. If you haven't already started looking for a place to live off-campus for next school year, it may be time to start looking now. Students are already vouching for residences despite laws in Ann Arbor restricting lease signings until December. So in case you've put no thought into this absolutely whatsoever, at least decide if you want to move. Looking for an ideal location and an ideal set of roommates may help matters later this semester when the competition for that house with a porch 5 minutes from class seems to be the most important thing on your list.

-Seniors, don't fret too much! After visiting the University of Michigan Law School for a speech on renewable energy sources two weeks ago, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm signed into a law a package requiring electricity to come from more renewable energy sources. According to Granholm, the package will introduce more jobs in the renewable energy department.

Election correspondent, Whitson Gordon, went out to the Diag today to find out if volunteers were getting results in registering new voters.

Monday Night Newsfeed: Mudbowl Preliminaries

For it being only the second Newsfeed of the semester the show is off the a great start! I am very excited to see where the new political segment with Matt Dupree (maybe other;) takes us. It was great to get to hear some opinions on campus about the debates last Thursday. I am also very excited that Caroline from Wednesday night was able to interview Governor Granholm. Go Caroline! You just don't know what is going to be on the show next. Anyways, enough about how hyped I am to see what content our next show has...I guess we will all have to wait and see.

Last Sunday Leslie and I put a package together about the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epslion's annual Mudbowl preliminaries, which they hold in order to raise money for MOTT's children's hospital. Every year they raise on average $20,000 to donate to the hospital. For the past 75 YEARS!! fraternities and sororities on campus have participated in the event batteling it out for their chance to compete in Mudbowl. On Sunday after weeding out the competition two fraternities and two sororities were left to compete in the final competitions. Fraternities Theta Chi and Phi Psi competed this past Tuesday at Burns park for the championship title. Alpha Phi and Tri Delt will compete in the mud Saturday October 4th at SAE during halftime of the Illinios game.

This was the first time that I attended the Mud Bowl prelims. I have to say it was very intense on both sides. A guy was actually carried away on a stretcher, because he broke his ankle. (Of course this happened right after Leslie and I put the camera away so we didn't get the video.) I guess this is to be expected when you are playing without any padding. The game is suppossed to be "two hand touch," but I saw quite a bit of tackling. The SAE referees are there to make sure things don't get out of hand, but I think injurees are inevitable when you have boys in a competition.

There were quite a bit of injuries, but there are also quite a bit of injuries playing IM sports. Monday there was a guy who broke his ankle playing IM Soccer so... I don't want to make it sound like the Mud Bowl prelims are too dangerous, because I don't think that. I think it is great that a fraternity has kept a philanthropy event alive for so long and that it has managed to sustain popularity. Plus, can you complain when they donate $20,000 to help sick children?

I didn't get to see much of the girls competition, but from what I saw they were giving it their all. The girls are coached by members of the fraternities and they have plays and strategies which they use. These girls obviously put in lots of time practicing for a chance to compete at mud bowl. Why?

I asked the Vice President of SAE what the winner received. He said they usually held a party with the winner... I am assuming that this is not the motivation for the sororities to duke it out. I think it is more about telling everyone that they won at mud bowl and simply about the title. Or is it about being able to take out some frustration physically on another sorority girl?

Political Update; Senate Passes Bailout Bill

Good evening, everybody! This is Matt Dupree, Political Correspondent with WolvTV! I'll be making regular posts here on the website henceforth to keep all the viewers of Newsfeed up to date between broadcasts of the leading news show here at the University of Michigan!

The biggest political news of the day is the passage of an amended bailout bill by the United States Senate. The new version of the legislation does not differ from the original draft when it comes to provisions relating to the economic crisis. But the new version does include a number of highly popular provisions that do not relate to the economic crisis (such as tax cuts and educational reform). It is the hope of the Senate leadership that these sections will curry enough support in the House of Representatives to allow for the passage of the bill. The House of Representatives failed the original legislation on Monday; it will vote on the altered act on Friday.

The presidential election remains tight with only a month to go until November 5th. Senator Barrack Obama has retained a minor lead (4%-6%) in national polls over Senator John McCain. The contest still remains close in most swing states, however, and it remains impossible to declare a victor. The Vice Presidential Debate will be held tomorrow between Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Joe Biden. Biden is expected to do far better than Palin in the debate given Palin's history of poor media performances and Biden's experience with public speaking.
